The Railway Worker’s Cottage Museum The railway worker’s cottage museum, in the heart of the GWR Railway Village Conservation area, is run by the Mechanics’ Institution Trust. STEAM - Museum of the Great Western Railway is housed in a beautifully restored Grade II listed railway building in the heart of the former Swindon railway works. Located right next to Swindon's Designer Outlet, the Museum tells the story of the men and women who built, operated and travelled on the Great Western Railway. The museum is home to the largest collections of GWR artefacts, which helps visitors relive the history of the GWR from its formation in 1835 to being absorbed into British Railways in 1948. The majority of these are part of the UK National Collection.
