If “Forrest Gump” had been written by William Faulkner, the result might have been something like “Sling Blade.” The movie is a work of great originality and fascination by Billy Bob Thornton, who wrote it, directed it and plays Karl Childers.
If there were the slightest
justice and curiosity in the Academy Award process, Thornton's work here would

I do think that you can pretty much, right from the beginning of the film, figure out how the film is gonna end. So that's definitely a positive.
This is an excellent movie with a heartfelt story. Sling Blade takes you down paths full of primitive, almost biblical implications, but it also finds comic relief in moments of palpable tension.
Thornton did not mention the short during the Sling Blade Oscar press tour because he had a falling out with Hickenlooper, who was claiming the movie was based on the short, while Thornton said it was based on his one-man show. Much of the audience appeal relies on the film's simplicity
