fish finders explained

If there is a fish underneath that is also stationary, what will you see on your fish finder display? Fishfinders use sonar to detect fish and other objects underwater. A wide beam cone scans between 40° - 60°, meaning you’ll be covering a large area. Your fish finder uses colour to show this difference. So make sure you choose a color palette that will highlight this difference. The big fish swims very quickly through the sonar beam, the small one swims slowly. But of course there are still a range of settings we haven’t mentioned. It does this based on factors like the size of the object and the strength of the sonar return. All the arches are roughly the same length (and they are all quite short). This return is from a school of bait fish. So let’s take a look at reading your fish finder display for underwater features. These are very valuable features to target for a range of species, and the good news is, they are easy to spot with a fish finder. SHARE. Fish finders use sound to locate objects underwater. “You have got a fish on the left-hand side sitting above it and smaller fish sitting in the weed bed.”The orange/purple return on the crest of the outcrop is the weed bed.
)?In general the thicker the arch the bigger the fish and if your boat or This image shows the importance of structure downscan when it comes to structure, and also how useful Lowrance’s FishReveal technology is.FishReveal adds a brightly coloured highlight to objects in the structure downscan image that are actually fish. The HDS Live also has Lowrance’s LiveSight function, which will be the subject of another article we are preparing. Again, the left-hand side of both images shows what’s in front of the boat and the right-hand side what’s behind. As for the image that occupies the bottom half, that’s where we need some further explanation. This shows the view to the left (port) side and right (starboard) side of the boat with the sonar beam shooting horizontally out from the transducer. The screen is constantly scrolling – this doesn’t mean your sonar is moving.Fish icons are a useful tool when you are getting started with a sonar device: your fish finder interprets the sonar data it receives and tries to work out if it is a fish or not.

In this blog we’re focusing on the actual images you see on your screen, so we won’t be getting too technical about how sonars work – but our page on The size of the area you’re scanning will be affected by the angle of the cone. So practice adjusting the sensitivity and get used to judging how much the bottom thickness varies based on this.Hard bottoms will just show as one thick line, so you can’t easily tell different types of hard bottom apart. It means there is a stationary fish under your fish finder, and it might be a very small one.The final point to remember when you are looking out for fish arches is that it doesn’t need to be a full arch. Look for the arches.Fish will show up on your screen as an arch (the reason why they are shown as an arch is explained in detail Now you have spotted some fish arches, it’s time to make sense of what each arch tells us about how big the fish is. As you get five metres (approx 5.5 yards) out on either side it begins to pick up the bottom. The first thing you see on the left-hand side of the sidescan image is the same group of three fish that we saw in both the vertical scan images sitting off that rock. The extra information imparted by the sidescan here is that these fish are about 10m (or 11 yards) out to the left-hand side of the the boat.

This kayaking angler is rockin’ with the StereoActive Portable Stereo while searching for interesting bottom structure with her Garmin STRIKER™ 4cv Fishfinder with GPS. There are 3 key differences though:The screenshot below shows both individual bait fish and a ball of baitfish. You will see one continuous line. If you see one of these, it is another indicator that the bottom is hard.Fish finders are incredibly valuable tools, and the more you learn about how to read them, the more successful your fishing trips will be. The angle (from the vertical) of the cone depends on the frequency the sonar is operating at (the higher the frequency the more narrow the cone). As a general rule of thumb for traditional sonar, when using the lower frequency (50 kHz or 83 kHz) the width (diameter of the cone) of the area of the bottom you are scanning is roughly equal to the depth. Fish Arches. The FishReveal also shows there is a fish in this cover too – you cannot really see it in the traditional sonar image. The five fish in the little trench there are all visible in structure downscan thanks to FishReveal. They work by sending out sound pulses and waiting for an echo.
