It took several weeks of correspondence to satisfy our schedule and requirements and the remarkable patience and understanding of Cheryl Korowotny, the International Director, in putting together our tour, and continued help during the tour, was greatly appreciated. Meals were served in courses, delicious, and pretty presentation. Both airport transfers or pick up from downtown Quito are available. The setting is romantic, and offers quiet spaces and many hiking trails that venture into the hills surrounding the lodge complex. As an artist and architect, he has developed ecolodges at the Quito, Tandayapa, and Milpe sites, and is currently doing so in the Amazon basin. That limited my species list to about 125. We never had the same dish in our ten days there. Dine at our open air restaurants with delicious cuisine, beautiful rain forest ambiance & superb photo options. The restaurant is on the second level of the tower, where you can see hummingbirds flying around the feeding stations.
With no heating, cooling, glass or screens, there were also essentially no annoying bugs. Describing San Jorge Milpe without providing information on the Ecolodge system would be a disservice to the reader.

Feeders with bananas are just outside the railings, with several hummingbird feeder inside the lodge so hummers fly into the lodge.

The Magic Birding Circuit visits Ecuador's most important and biologically-diverse birding locations including our 7 strategically located private birding reserves and our 4 award-winning birding Eco-lodges. Birds know about this arrangement, so you see many birds at dawn that eat insects instead of bananas . Look at the extensive website for plenty of details and excellent photos. Own or manage this property? Payments made by partners impact the order of prices displayed. This was our second time to come back to this “Magical Birding Circuit.” San Jorge de Milpe Eco-Lodge Orchid & Bird Reserve was one of our stops, in our ten-day birding, to view and take picture of rare birds in the Tropical forest.

The lodge staff was courteous and very friendly.

It was truly an amazing experience.15 day Magic Birding Circuit Tour staying at San Jorge Eco-LodgesWe (mid-80s father and late-50s son) undertook a 15 day Magic Birding Circuit Tour in September, staying at San Jorge Eco-Lodges at Quito, Tandyapa, Milpe, and visiting sites of their future lodges at Guacamayas and Cosanga. Two visits by a Tayra at Milpe, who stole all the bananas, was a special treat after a dozen birding trips to South America without seeing one. We had the great good fortune of having George Cruz as our personal guide. I am a lifelong birder (now 89), she a wildlife photographer. He had a telescope available so we could get close looks. Doesn't get much better than that! I suggest 6:00. At San Jorge's Eco-lodge in Quito there are 2 options: the Main Lodge - a renovated 18th century hacienda, and a new Lodge up the hill. We certainly felt in 'good hands' with Bicente (sorry if I have not spelt this correctly!) We recommend calling ahead to confirm details. Two new lodges are being built to the east of Quito in the Amazon and, having visited both sites, we are very confident that they will be at least as high a standard as the existing ones. Does San Jorge Eco-Lodge & Botanical Reserve have any great views?Yes, guests often enjoy the mountain view available here. Are there any historical sites close to San Jorge Eco-Lodge & Botanical Reserve? Many travellers enjoy visiting Comunidad Judia Del Ecuador (3.6 miles). I would be remiss if I didn't also mention that the accommodations, food, and ability to interact with the staff were a special part of our visit. Approximately 6 months ago I purchased a high end DSLR camera, but had only begun to learn how to use it. Own or manage this property? He is a renaissance man: visionary, knowledgeable, and extremely gracious. These places are hard to beat, except that we needed more time. Since the location is on the outer limits of the city, there are neighbors with animals (dogs and roosters) but the main sound heard at the lodge is that of songbirds singing, from daybreak until evening.

My birding was limited to the lodges and nearby, since I could not hike through the forest. The staff were very attentive, and super nice. There was no rain. Commendably, by employing local and indigenous staff it exposes them to the value of eco-tourism and also adds to the experience and charm for the visitor. Feeders with bananas are just outside the railings, with several hummingbird feeder inside the lodge so hummers fly into the lodge. Ecuadoran cuisine is delightful, and the staff at each site went out of their way to provide us with beautiful and delectable local food 3 times a day (to say nothing of providing us with coffee and a bite to eat in the blinds at 5 am in the morning). I would still recommend having a flash light for doing the walk after dark. Not only that but they were both so very friendly and so easy to get along with. I am a lifelong birder (now 89), she a wildlife photographer. Two visits by a Tayra at Milpe, who stole all the bananas, was a special treat after a dozen birding trips to South America without seeing one. Both were exceptional and what shone through was their love of the birds and their eagerness to show us, not just as many species as possible but also to try to get the best views of each bird.
Guest rooms have private baths & wood fires, access by a loggia, an open patio surrounded by flowering landscape, water fountains and nice views.

This is a good place to be in the nature with comfort. This is the second time we have came back to this lodge. One of the things that is really important on a holiday of this type is to have confidence in the ability of the drivers and so feel safe. You can sit or stand inside the lodge with close views of numerous species, at least the ones that like bananas. We own and protect seven natural reserves and own four eco-lodges . That limited my species list to about 125.
